Vegan Tortilla Chips (whole food plant based NO OIL)

The vegan journey begins….

My husband loves something “crunchy” as a snack and with meals. His favorites are; tortilla chips, pita chips and of course potato chips. I needed to come up with an oil-free vegan alternative. Many of the recipe books call for “oil free” tortillas, but never mention a brand or where to get them! After, scouring several Facebook Vegan groups I found these at Trader Joes. You can also make them yourself, but I will save that for another day.
These are super easy and you can make the entire package in your oven at once. (If you have 3 shelves.)
- Preheat oven to 365 degrees F.
- I began with 3 half-sheet pans lined with parchment paper (I now buy precut sheets, what a difference that makes! No more edges that roll up on you!!!!)
- Next cut your tortillas into 6 slices each.
- Spread uncooked chips onto your sheets.
- Spray chips with lime juice and sprinkle with salt (or other seasoning of your choice), the lime juice helps the salt stick. (So many of the recipes online call for cooking spray, but I really am trying to go oil-free, and so many of those sprays contain silicone as well.) Buy a couple spray bottles from the Dollar Store, they are great for coating vegetables with vinegar too.

- Put all 3 trays in the oven (one of the few times I can use all three shelves in mine.)
- Cook for 10 minutes, and remove and flip them over (I use my fingers, they aren’t that hot, but trays are.)
- Cook an additional 6-8 minutes depending on your preference. (This step you need to watch carefully after the first 5 minutes, but you’ll get a feel of what your oven requires after the first try.)
- Let cool and store in airtight container.

These chips weigh in at .5 g of total fat in 6 chips or 1 g for 12 chips, (I’m guessing the fat comes from the cornmeal, but I am not a dietitian.) . Compare to the 7 g fat in 11 chips of Costco’s “Kirkland” Organic Corn Chips.
